What Wood Stove Installation in Flower Mound Includes
An open fireplace sends most of its heat up the flue. A wood stove puts most of it in the room, which is why homeowners in Lantana, Double Oak and the older neighborhoods near the Cross Timbers woods, where firewood is on the property, keep asking for one. Flower Mound Chimney Sweep Professionals installs freestanding stoves and wood inserts from the hearth pad to the cap.
- Site visit. We measure the room, the wall the stove will sit against, the ceiling and roof path for the chimney, and any existing fireplace and flue. A camera goes up the old flue if there is one.
- Stove and venting choice. Stove size matched to the room, freestanding or insert, stainless liner in an existing chimney or a new listed chimney through the roof. You get a written price for the stove, the venting, the hearth pad and the install.
- Permit. We confirm what Flower Mound or your town requires and file what falls on us.
- Install. Hearth pad, stove set to the listed clearances, stovepipe, liner or chimney, roof flashing, storm collar and cap, and firestops at every floor and ceiling.
- First fire. We light a small break-in fire, check the draft and the stovepipe joints, and walk you through loading, air control and the ash pan.
Clearances, Hearth and Chimney
| Part | What the install needs | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Clearance to walls | The distance in the stove manual, or NFPA 211’s 36 inches for an unlisted stove, reduced only with a listed heat shield | Radiant heat chars framing behind drywall over years |
| Hearth pad | Non-combustible, extending the listed distance in front and to the sides, with the R-value the manual gives | Embers and radiant heat on the floor |
| Stovepipe | Double-wall for tight clearances, single-wall at 18 inches, rising toward the chimney | Smoke and creosote in a cool, flat pipe |
| Chimney | Listed metal chimney or a stainless liner sized to the stove outlet, insulated where the manual says | Draft and creosote control |
| Height | 3 feet above the roof penetration, 2 feet above anything within 10 feet | Draft, and no smoke rolling off the roof into the room |
| Cap | Mesh-screened cap on every stove chimney | Rain, sparks, chimney swifts and squirrels |
Most of these numbers come from the stove’s own listing, and the rest from NFPA 211. A stove we install is set to both.
Signs a Wood Stove Fits Your Home
- An open masonry fireplace that cools the room when it burns
- Firewood on the property, or a steady supply of seasoned oak
- A large room, great room or addition that the furnace never warms
- An outage-proof heat source for the ice storms that hit North Texas every few winters
- An older stove that is not EPA-certified and smokes, which can be replaced with a cleaner one on the same chimney
A gas fireplace or insert is the better fit when there is no wood supply and the goal is convenience. Our fireplace installation page covers those.
EPA-Certified Stoves
Every new wood stove sold in the United States today has to meet the EPA’s 2020 emission limit, which caps smoke at 2.0 grams per hour for most stoves. Those stoves burn a third less wood for the same heat than the old steel boxes from the 1980s and make far less creosote. The EPA’s Burn Wise program explains how to size a stove to a room and what the certification label means on its choosing the right wood-burning stove page. We install stoves that carry that label, and we size them to the room, since an oversized stove run on low air smolders and loads the chimney with creosote.
Chimney Relining for Wood Stoves
A masonry fireplace flue is 8 by 12 inches or larger. A stove outlet is 6 inches. Venting a stove into the big flue cools the smoke, kills the draft and coats the flue with creosote in a season. A stainless liner sized to the stove, run from the stove or insert to the cap and insulated where the manual requires, fixes all three. Our chimney relining page covers liner types and how they go in. The old flue gets a camera inspection first, and a cracked tile or a missing crown is fixed before the liner goes down. Every stove chimney ends in a mesh cap, and our chimney cap installation page shows the options.
Wood Stove Cleaning
Stoves make more creosote than open fireplaces because they burn slower. A stove used most nights from November to February in Flower Mound needs a wood stove cleaning at the end of the season and a check before the next one, and a camera look at the liner each year. Burn seasoned wood, at least six months split and stacked, and keep the air control open enough for a visible flame. Smoldering fires are what fill a liner with glazed creosote.
