What Chimney Cap Installation in Flower Mound Includes
A chimney cap is the metal cover that sits on top of the flue. It has a lid to shed rain, mesh on the sides to keep animals and embers where they belong, and a base that bolts to the flue tile or clamps to the pipe. Flower Mound Chimney Sweep Professionals installs chimney caps on masonry and factory-built chimneys across Flower Mound, Lewisville and Southlake, often on the same visit as a sweep or inspection.
A cap install is quick, but it is done from the roof and it starts with a look at what the cap will sit on:
- Inspect the top of the chimney. We check the crown or chase cover, the flue tile or pipe, and look down the flue with a camera. A cap bolted to a crumbling crown does not stay put.
- Measure. Outside dimensions of the flue tile, or the pipe diameter and brand on a prefab chimney. Two flues close together get one multi-flue cap.
- Quote. Written price for the cap and the install, free.
- Install. Stainless caps bolt to the flue tile with masonry anchors or clamp to the pipe. Multi-flue and custom caps anchor to the crown. We seal the fasteners and photograph the finished cap.
Most installs take under an hour once the cap is on site. Common sizes are often on the truck; custom and multi-flue caps are ordered to your measurements.
Signs You Need a Chimney Cap
- No cap at all, which is common on homes where a storm took the old one
- Rust streaks down the crown, brick or chase from a galvanized cap
- A cap that rocks or spins when the wind blows
- Torn or missing mesh
- Water in the firebox or rust on the damper after rain
- Birds, scratching or droppings in the fireplace
- Leaves and twigs on the smoke shelf during a sweep
- A chimney swift nest in the flue in summer
A cap is the least expensive chimney repair and the one that prevents the most expensive ones. Water down an open flue rusts the damper, soaks the smoke shelf and gets into the firebox; animals block the flue and bring fleas and smell; and an uncapped wood-burning flue drops live embers on the roof. The U.S. Fire Administration’s home heating fire guidance lists a cap or spark arrestor among the basics for a wood-burning fireplace.
Types of Chimney Caps We Install
| Type | Fits | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Single-flue stainless cap | One clay flue tile, bolts to the tile | Most masonry chimneys in Flower Mound |
| Multi-flue cap | Two or more flues under one lid, anchors to the crown | Chimneys with a fireplace flue and a furnace or water heater flue |
| Custom cap or shroud | Full chimney top, built to the measurements | Large masonry chimneys and brick-veneer chases where a standard cap looks small |
| Prefab (factory-built) cap | The metal pipe, clamp or slip fit, matched to the fireplace brand | Homes built from the 1990s on with a metal fireplace in a wood chase |
| Top-sealing damper cap | Replaces the throat damper with a sealed lid at the top | Fireplaces with a rusted damper, or to stop cold air and summer smells |
| Wind-directional cap | Turns with the wind | Fireplaces that smoke when the wind blows from one side |
Stainless steel is the standard material. Galvanized caps cost less and rust within a few years here. Copper is a cosmetic upgrade that lasts as long as stainless. Mesh is 3/4 inch on most caps so sparks stay in and creosote does not clog it.
Caps for Prefab Chimneys
Most homes in Bridlewood, Wellington and the other neighborhoods built since the 1990s have a factory-built fireplace. The flue is a double- or triple-wall metal pipe that comes through a chase cover, and it needs the cap the manufacturer lists for that pipe, not a masonry cap set on top. The wrong cap restricts draft and can void the fireplace listing. We identify the brand from the fireplace label and bring the matching cap. While we are up there we check the chase cover, since a rusted cover is the other common leak on these chimneys.
Chimney Animal Removal
A cap is the only lasting fix for raccoons, squirrels and birds in the chimney, but it goes on last. If an animal is in the flue now, our chimney animal removal visit gets it out, cleans the nest and droppings off the smoke shelf, and then caps the flue. Chimney swifts are the exception: they nest here from May to September and are protected by federal law, so a flue with swifts in it gets capped in the fall after they leave.
Chimney Chase Cover Replacement
On a prefab chimney, the cap sits on the pipe and the chase cover seals the wood chase around it. A new cap on a rusted cover solves half the problem. We quote a stainless chimney chase cover replacement when the cover is rusted or pooling water.
Chimney Crown Repair
On a masonry chimney, the cap bolts to the flue tile above the crown. If the crown is cracked or the tile is loose, we recommend chimney crown repair first so the cap has a sound base. Both can be done on the same visit. For other roof-top repairs, see the main chimney repair page, or add the cap to a chimney sweep and get the flue cleaned at the same time.
