What Chimney Relining in Flower Mound Includes
A chimney liner is the inner tube that carries smoke and gases from the firebox to the top of the chimney. Flower Mound Chimney Sweep Professionals relines chimneys in Flower Mound when that tube is cracked, gapped, rusted or the wrong size for the appliance below it. Here is how a relining visit goes.
- Camera scan. We run a camera up the flue and record every tile joint, crack and gap. You see the footage and the photos before anyone quotes a liner.
- Measure and size. The liner has to match the appliance. A wood fireplace needs a liner sized to its opening, a wood stove or insert usually needs a 6-inch liner, and a gas appliance needs the size its manual calls for.
- Prepare the flue. Loose creosote and broken tile edges are cleaned out so the new liner slides in without snagging.
- Install the liner. A stainless steel liner is lowered from the top, connected to the appliance or smoke chamber at the bottom, and finished with a top plate and a cap. Insulation goes around it when the appliance or the chimney calls for it.
- Check and photograph. We scan the finished liner, test the draft, and send you before and after photos.
Most relining jobs take one day, and you get a firm price before the first tool comes off the truck.
Why Flower Mound Chimneys Need a New Liner
Flower Mound has three kinds of chimneys, and each one fails in its own way.
- Masonry chimneys with clay tile liners. These are common in the older homes near Grapevine Lake and Lake Lewisville. Clay tile cracks from heat shock during a chimney fire, from settling, and from water. Spring hail cracks the crown, rain gets in, and the hard freeze every few winters (February 2021 was the worst) splits the wet tile joints.
- Factory-built fireplaces. Most homes built from the 1990s on in Bridlewood, Wellington and Lakeside DFW have a metal fireplace inside a wood-framed chase. The metal flue sections rust where the chase cover leaks, and the joints can separate when the chase moves.
- Fireplaces converted to gas. Gas logs and gas inserts are very common here. Gas exhaust carries water vapor and mild acids that eat clay tile and mortar joints over the years, so a flue that was fine for wood can be gapped after a decade of gas.
NFPA 211, the national standard for chimneys and fireplaces, calls for a liner that is sound and continuous from the appliance to the top of the chimney. A cracked or missing liner is a reason to stop using the fireplace until it is relined, because gaps let heat reach the wood framing and let carbon monoxide into the rooms that share the chimney wall.
Signs You Need Chimney Relining
- Pieces of clay tile or sand-like grit on the firebox floor
- The camera shows cracks, gaps or missing mortar between tiles
- A smoke smell in an upstairs bedroom that shares the chimney wall
- White, chalky stains on the brick outside
- A chimney fire, even a small one you put out yourself
- You are adding a wood stove or a fireplace insert
- You switched from wood to a gas insert
- A carbon monoxide alarm near the fireplace has gone off
Any one of these is a reason for a camera scan. The scan is part of every chimney inspection we do.
Types of Chimney Liners
| Liner | Used for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Clay tile | Original masonry chimneys | Lasts decades, but cracks from heat shock and water, and cannot be patched well from inside |
| Flexible stainless steel | Wood stoves, inserts, relining old tile flues | Bends around offsets, comes bare or insulated, sold as listed kits |
| Rigid stainless steel | Straight flues | Smooth wall, strong draft, easy to sweep |
| Aluminum | Some gas appliances only | Light and low cost, never for wood |
| Cast-in-place | Badly damaged masonry | A poured liner that also strengthens the stack, done by specialty installers; we focus on stainless steel |
For almost every relining job in Flower Mound, a stainless steel liner is the answer. It handles wood, gas and pellet exhaust, and a sweep can brush it the same way as a tile flue.
Level 2 Chimney Inspection
The relining decision starts with a Level 2 chimney inspection. That is the video scan NFPA 211 calls for when a house is sold, after a chimney fire or a storm, or when the fuel changes from wood to gas. The report shows every tile joint, so you and the buyer or the insurance adjuster see the same thing we do. If the flue is sound, you get that in writing too.
Chimney Repair and Chimney Rebuild
A liner fixes the inside of the chimney. It does not fix a cracked crown, loose bricks or a leaning stack, and water coming in from the top will shorten the life of the new liner. Our chimney repair page covers crowns, flashing and tuckpointing, and the chimney rebuild page covers chimneys that are past patching. We also finish every liner with a stainless top plate and a chimney cap so rain and animals stay out.
Wood Stove Installation
A freestanding wood stove or a fireplace insert needs its own 6-inch stainless liner run the full height of the chimney, usually insulated. Our wood stove installation page explains clearances, hearth pads and why the old open flue is too big for a stove. If heavy, glazed creosote is in the way, we handle creosote removal before the liner goes in.
