What Fireplace Remodeling in Flower Mound Includes

Most Flower Mound fireplaces were built between 1990 and 2010 and look like it: a brass or black bifold door, a brick face in a tan or red blend, a short mantel, and a factory-built firebox that still works. Fireplace remodeling updates the part you look at without losing the part that works. Flower Mound Chimney Sweep Professionals handles the firebox, insert, venting and finish as one project.

  1. Design visit. We measure the opening, the face and the wall, read the fireplace’s model tag for its clearances, and run a camera up the flue. You tell us the look you want and we tell you what the listing allows.
  2. Written price. Material, labor, any insert or log set, and the schedule, in one written estimate.
  3. Demolition. Old doors, trim and mantel come off. If the brick face is coming down, it is cut back to the framing or the firebox flange.
  4. Firebox and insert. Any firebox repair happens now, and an insert or log set goes in while the wall is open.
  5. New face. Backer board, then stone, tile or brick set with heat-rated materials, and the mantel at the listed height.
  6. Doors, trim and test. New doors or screen, grout and sealer, then we light the fireplace and check the draft.

Remodel Options and What They Change

Option What it does Touches the firebox or vent?
New doors or screen Replaces brass bifolds with a clean-face screen or black doors No
Paint or whitewash the brick Lightens a dated brick face for the lowest cost No
Tile or stone overlay Covers the brick from hearth to ceiling No, if clearances to the opening are kept
New mantel or surround Raises, widens or replaces the shelf No, if set at the listed height
Gas log set Adds a clean gas fire to a wood firebox Yes, damper clamped open, gas line by a licensed plumber
Gas or wood insert Adds real heat behind a new face Yes, liner in the flue, new surround panel
Raise or lower the hearth Changes a raised hearth to flush, or adds one Yes, hearth extension must meet the listing

The quiet rule behind every row is the fireplace listing, the manufacturer’s sheet of clearances to combustibles, mantel heights and hearth sizes. Remodels that ignore it put wood too close to the opening, and that is the scorched mantel we get called to replace. The Hearth, Patio and Barbecue Association publishes industry guidance on hearth products and their safe installation, and every unit we work on is set to its own listing.

Signs Your Fireplace Is Ready for a Remodel

  • Brass bifold doors or a mesh curtain from the 1990s
  • A brick face that does not match the rest of a renovated room
  • A mantel too low or too shallow for the opening
  • A wood fireplace you light once a year because of the mess and the cold draft
  • A firebox that works but looks worn after a repair
  • A room remodel that opens the wall anyway, so the fireplace can change at the same time

If the fireplace itself does not work, start with our fireplace repair page. A remodel on top of a cracked firebox or a stuck damper only hides the problem for one season.

Fireplace Installation

When the plan includes a gas insert, a direct-vent unit or a new factory-built fireplace behind the new face, the unit side is covered on our fireplace installation page. The two services run as one project in Flower Mound: the insert goes in, the liner goes down the flue, and the face is built around the new surround panel. If the only change inside the firebox is a log set, our gas log installation page explains vented and vent-free choices and the licensed plumber who runs the gas line.

What We Check Before the Wall Opens

  • The flue. A camera check for cracked tiles, creosote and nests. A remodel is the cheapest time to fix a flue, and the worst time to find it later.
  • The chase. On a factory-built fireplace, the wood-framed chase behind the face gets checked for water damage from a rusted chase cover. Rotted framing is handled on our chimney siding and chase repair page before the new face goes on.
  • The clearances. Mantel height, side wall distance, hearth depth and the distance from the opening to any combustible trim, all from the unit’s listing.
  • The gas. Whether a line already reaches the firebox, and whether it needs a licensed plumber to extend it.

A fireplace inspection covers the same list on a fireplace that is not being remodeled yet, and it is a good first step when you are still deciding.

Questions

Fireplace Remodeling FAQs

What is the average cost to renovate a fireplace?

It depends on the face material and whether the firebox or insert changes. Fixr's fireplace installation guide lists surround materials by the square foot: tile at $5 to $40, brick at $3 to $50 and stone at $40 to $75 installed. Those are national ranges, not our prices. We give you a free written estimate with the material, labor and any insert priced separately.

How can I modernize my old fireplace?

The three changes with the most effect in Flower Mound homes are removing the brass bifold doors, covering or painting the 1990s brick face, and raising or replacing the mantel. Adding a gas insert or log set turns a fireplace you never use into one you light every cold night. We plan all of those together so the wall is opened once.

What is the most affordable way to update a fireplace?

New doors or a screen, a painted or whitewashed brick face, and a new mantel shelf. None of those change the firebox or venting, so the work stays small. A tile overlay on the existing brick is the next step up.

What is the new trend for fireplaces?

Clean-face openings with no visible frame, large-format tile or stacked stone from hearth to ceiling, a simple wood mantel, and a gas insert or linear gas unit behind it. Painted brick is the budget version of the same look.

Can I tile over a brick fireplace?

Yes, when the brick is sound and the tile is set with a heat-rated thinset outside the firebox opening. Tile cannot go inside the firebox, and the first few inches around the opening have to meet the fireplace listing's clearance to combustibles if the tile is set on a backer board. We check both before we quote.

Can I put a wood mantel on my fireplace?

Yes, at the right height. Most factory-built fireplaces list a minimum distance from the top of the opening to a wood mantel, often 12 inches or more depending on how far the mantel sticks out. A mantel that is too low scorches, and it is the most common mistake we fix in remodels done without the listing.

Does fireplace remodeling change the chimney?

Not usually, if the fireplace stays the same. Adding an insert adds a liner in the flue, and removing a factory-built unit for a new one changes the chimney section and chase cover. The chimney gets a camera check at the start of every remodel so there are no surprises when the wall is open.

How long does a fireplace remodel take?

A door, mantel and paint update is one day. A tile or stone face is two to four days with curing time. Adding an insert adds a day plus the unit lead time. We give you the schedule with the written price.
