What Fireplace Installation in Flower Mound Includes

A new fireplace is three decisions: fuel, venting and location. Flower Mound Chimney Sweep Professionals walks through all three on the first visit, then handles the install from the framing to the first fire.

  1. Site visit. We look at the room, the outside wall, the roof line, the existing chimney or chase if there is one, and where the gas line sits. We measure the opening on an insert job.
  2. Unit choice. Wood or gas, direct-vent or vented, insert or full fireplace, size matched to the room. You get a written price for the unit, the venting and the install.
  3. Permits and plumber. We confirm the permit the city wants. A licensed plumber runs or extends the gas line and pressure-tests it, as Texas law requires.
  4. Install. The unit is set to the listed clearances, the vent or chimney is run, the hearth extension is built, and the firestops and chase cover go in.
  5. Finish and test. Logs, glass and trim go on. We light it, check the flame and draft, and show you the controls.

Fireplace Types We Install

Type Where it fits Venting Heat to the room
Direct-vent gas fireplace New room, outside wall, remodel Coaxial pipe straight through the wall or roof High, sealed glass front
Gas insert Existing masonry fireplace Two liners down the old flue High
Vented gas log set Existing wood fireplace The existing flue, damper open Low
Factory-built wood fireplace New build or addition with a framed chase Listed metal chimney through the roof Low to medium
Wood insert Existing masonry fireplace Stainless liner down the old flue High
Freestanding wood stove Room corner or hearth Stovepipe and listed chimney or liner High

Most Flower Mound homes have a factory-built fireplace in a wood-framed chase. When that unit is rusted through or discontinued, a new factory-built unit of the same size usually fits the chase with a new chimney section and chase cover. A gas log set is the lightest option, and our gas log installation page covers it. Wood stoves have their own page on wood stove installation.

Signs It Is Time for a New Fireplace

  • Rust holes or warped steel in a factory-built firebox
  • A discontinued unit with no refractory panels or valves left to buy
  • A masonry firebox and flue that would cost more to rebuild than to line and fit with an insert
  • An open wood fireplace that cools the house more than it heats it
  • A remodel that moves walls or changes the room layout
  • A new addition or outdoor living area with no fireplace yet

Where the firebox is the only problem, our fireplace repair page is the cheaper path. We tell you which it is after we look.

Inserts for Existing Masonry Fireplaces

The older homes near Grapevine Lake and Lake Lewisville have full masonry fireplaces with a clay-tile flue. Those openings take a gas or wood insert without touching the brick. The insert is a sealed steel firebox with its own glass door and blower. It slides into the opening, a stainless liner runs from the insert to the cap inside the old flue, and a surround panel closes the gap between the insert and the brick. A gas insert heats a great room on a thermostat. A wood insert burns a third less wood than the open fireplace it replaces and keeps the heat in the room. The old flue gets a camera check first, and a cracked tile or a missing crown is fixed before the liner goes down.

Venting and Clearances

Every fireplace is listed by its manufacturer with exact clearances to framing, mantels and side walls, a vent type and a maximum vent run. We install to that listing and to NFPA 211. On a wood fireplace or insert that means the chimney meets the 3-2-10 rule above the roof and the old flue gets a stainless liner sized to the insert. On a direct-vent gas unit it means the termination cap sits the listed distance from windows, doors, soffits and the gas meter. The U.S. Fire Administration lists heating equipment among the leading causes of home fires and covers safe installation and use in its heating fire safety guidance. A fireplace installed to its listing is the first step in that list.

Gas Lines and the Licensed Plumber

Gas piping from the meter to the fireplace is plumbing work in Texas and is done by a licensed plumber. We coordinate that plumber on every gas fireplace or insert install, schedule the line and the unit on the same day where we can, and handle everything from the appliance shutoff forward: the valve, burner, pilot, logs, glass and venting.

Fireplace Remodeling

A new insert or direct-vent unit usually changes the face of the fireplace too. The old brass doors go, the opening may change size, and the brick face often gets tile, stone or a new mantel. Our fireplace remodeling page covers the finish side, and most new-fireplace projects in Flower Mound run both together so the wall is opened once.

Questions

Fireplace Installation FAQs

What is the average cost to install a fireplace?

Fixr's fireplace installation guide puts a new fireplace at $1,000 to $5,000 on average, with gas fireplaces at $2,500 to $10,000, wood-burning fireplaces at $2,500 to $30,000, and a new chimney adding $4,000 to $8,000. Those are national ranges, not our prices. We give you a free written estimate after we see the room and the venting path.

What is the 3-2-10 rule for fireplace chimneys?

NFPA 211 says a chimney must extend at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof and at least 2 feet higher than any part of the building within 10 feet. It keeps the flue above the wind turbulence off the roof so the fireplace drafts. We measure it on every wood fireplace and stove install.

Can I add a fireplace to an existing house?

Yes. A direct-vent gas fireplace vents straight through an outside wall and is the simplest add to an existing room. A factory-built wood fireplace needs a framed chase and a metal chimney through the roof. A gas or wood insert goes into a masonry fireplace you already have. We look at the wall, the roof line and the gas line and tell you which fits.

What is the new trend for fireplaces?

In Flower Mound it is replacing a builder-grade 1990s wood fireplace with a direct-vent gas unit or a gas insert that puts heat into the room, and finishing it with a tile or stone face and a linear or clean-face opening. Most of those projects pair this page with our fireplace remodeling service.

What is the difference between a fireplace insert and a new fireplace?

An insert is a sealed metal firebox that slides into an existing masonry fireplace and vents through a liner in the old flue. A new fireplace is a full unit with its own firebox and chimney or vent. Inserts are the faster path when you already have a masonry chimney that passes inspection.

Do I need a permit for fireplace installation in Flower Mound?

Usually yes for a new fireplace or a new vent through a wall or roof, and the gas line permit is pulled by the licensed plumber. Permit rules vary by city, so we confirm what Flower Mound, Lewisville or your town requires when we quote the job and we handle the paperwork that falls on us.

How long does fireplace installation take?

A gas insert in an existing masonry fireplace is one day once the unit arrives. A direct-vent gas fireplace in an existing wall is one to two days. A new factory-built wood fireplace with a framed chase and chimney is several days plus the finish work. Unit lead times run two to six weeks.

Can a plumber install a gas fireplace?

The plumber runs and tests the gas line, which Texas law reserves for licensed plumbers. The fireplace unit, its venting, clearances, hearth and finish are hearth work. We install the fireplace and coordinate the plumber for the line.
